Insane censors !

" Nature knows no indecencies ; man invents them." Mark Twain

In our crazy world where so many people (and children !) prefer to watch bloody soaps and insane news instead of beauty and grace, to make war instead of love, to buy arms instead of flowers, sometimes I don't really feel at home.

Freud and Jung have called the censors' mental disorders : the sexual repression.

To be clear, they prohibit what they want the more, hardly repressing their own natural pulsions because of foolish religious or/and cultural dogmas. What a poor way to live...

To celebrate this event, because the struggle against censorship is a wonderful cause, I've found these quotes. They give us hope and confidence.

Yes, we love Fine Art and we are right.

Kevin Greggain
"Sense-or-ship Blows"

" The fact is that censorship always defeats its own purpose, for it creates, in the end, the kind of society that is incapable of exercising real discretion."
Henry Steele Commager

" Censorship reflects society's lack of confidence in itself. It is a hallmark of an authoritarian regime."
Potter Stewart

" Think for yourselves and let others enjoy the privilege to do so, too."
Voltaire

" In the long run of history, the censor and the inquisitor have always lost."
Alfred Whitney Griswold

" A free press can be good or bad, but, most certainly, without freedom a press will never be anything but bad".
Albert Camus

" Obscenity is not a quality inherent in a book or picture, but is solely and exclusively a contribution of the reading mind, and hence cannot be defined in terms of the qualities of a book or picture."
Theodore Schroeder

" You can cage the singer but not the song."
Harry Belafonte

" Censorship of anything, at any time, in any place, on whatever pretense, has always been and always be the last resort of the boob and the bigot."
Eugene Gladstone O'Neill

What is really sad is how many photographers and artists take the position of “Why should I care it doesn't effect me or or even promote the idea of censorship. Yes when a photographer says I shoot landscapes or I shoot sports so why should I care if they censor erotic or other types of nudes, that piss. me off a hundred times more then when some bible thumper goes on some stupid crusade!

“The laws against public nudity make no sense. The idea that Jerry Falwell can go topless while Cindy Crawford cannot is an absolute affront to logic, common sense and the 5000 year human struggle for aesthetic taste.”
~Peter McWilliams

I'm so sorry to see they put a tag on your page. We're under attack from the right and it's so sad. Yet the child porn people will keep on working and no one will be saved.

Is this growth of censorship only an American problem or have others around the world felt it as well?

It sickens me that we watch the horrible "reality tv" shows and are too afraid to see the reality we live in. We are afraid to see what humans truly are. We have wars that are so sanitized. We have people in the world who suffer from hunger, disease, and other horrible problems. We have corrupt business people stealing the wealth of nations. We also have the beauty of people. Their art is something we should celebrate. We have the beauty of the individual. We have the beauty of the human figure, but that is considered obscene.

All most people care about is who the next American (or any other nationality) Idol winner is. We need to peel back the curtain of "reality TV" so humanity can feel repulsed, rejoiced, aroused, disgusted, loved, hated, empathetic toward the true reality our world is in.

Thank you for this great post.
