Jan Murphy : A selection of my favourites

My recent favourites and words that express how they make me feel.

by Jan Murphy
UdA Art Editor and Photographer

I recently was looking through my favourites gallery on deviantART, recalling why these images were randomly selected and how they had touched me in some way.

I wish to share some of them with you and talk about how they make me feel. I only hope you find it as helpful/interesting or just plain beautiful to share as I do looking at them.

In no particular order but how they appear on my computer, please let me take you on a journey with my creative thought processes for a short time... Enjoy.

OnePixArt -
"Merrique II"
Art Model, Writer and Singer St Merrique -

This image is all about the movement for me, it is so fluid and the model looks totally absorbed in what she is doing and nothing more exists for that moment. For me, (no I'm not a trained dancer) but this is what dance is about - losing yourself, forgetting the moment and really feeling the dance. It is really tough to capture dance as the poses always look posed but this, well it is what I wish to capture one day.

Alberich
"No Light Without Darkness"

This model looks so graceful and one would almost forget that she is under water for a moment. The way the material flows and above all (literally) the reflection and oh how I love these. Does remind me of a stunning photographer, Howard Schatz underwater series that really blew my mind that drew me to this image.

Charles E. Nevols -
"Resolute"
Art Model and Photographer Kat Love -

Such a powerful portrayal of a woman about her business - nothing is stopping her either, she is on a mission and I love that. There is something gentle also that comes through for me - the pose maybe ? I don't know. Overall, I truly just adore the image and the clouds - well they just complete the image by making it a perfect backdrop.

Christopher Ryan
"Dedition"
Art Model Brooke Lynne -

I kept coming back to this image - there is a message here, I kept looking but I come to the conclusion that there are so many that can be read here. Personally, I love that fact, that it leaves you wondering. It leaves you thinking why is she in the sea ? Why the chair ? Is this symbolic - I will leave to you to wonder also.

Ian Savage
"Elastics"
Art Model
Cinnamomum-verum

What can I say except what the image does to your senses ? The model could be underwater as the pose is oh so fluid, I love this image - it has me entwined along with it. Having worked with Cinnamomum-verum, I know what she is capable of, and look forward to working with her in the near future. Stunning work by them both.

Pavel Kiselev -
"Feeding fish"

This to me, almost looks like a painting as the sky is so dramatic and leads us to the lady in the water surrounded by fish. Totally captivating and every time I look at it, I love it more.

Mark Varley -
"Dancer non nude 01"
Art Model
Joy

Dynamic comes to mind yet with such grace. This pose looks effortless, yet you know, you just know how many muscles are being used to hold it and keep it there. I'm in awe I guess at the level of fitness it takes to hold this. So beautifully captured too, love the white background, helping the dancer stand out further.

Gregory Brown
"No 72"
Art Models
Madame Bink and Kayt

Reflections, beauty, gentle, elegance, calm, serenity - these are all words that come to mind when I look at this image - absolutely stunning modelling and photography. Hats off to this one.

Katrina Stranger
"Chill Out"

The shallow depth of field on this is just perfect as is the lighting. The title truly does describe the image and you see that this person really needs to just take time out. Brilliant work, really clever.

Vernon Trent -
"Arch"
Art Model Xania

I love the lighting in this, so perfect or is it an HDR ? The pose by the model and in such an amazing building is really well modelled. You are drawn into the image, you are captivated by it and you want to know or go to this place to take your own shot. Bravo.

Jason Tag -
"Tree Goddess"
Art Model Sylvia

This image is actually on my wishlist - what a pose. When I saw the thumbnail for this, I thought it was an image of a tree, when I enlarged it, my breath was taken away. What a model, what a pose and what a stunningly well captured image. What more can I say except I'm glad you are back Jason :)

David Winge -
"Desert Treasures"
Art Model Rebel Smith

This apeals to me as in such a large barren place, you come across this wooden construction (David, please enlighten me as to what it is). Fabulous use of skintones and textures is what I adore about this - really enjoy David's work and recommend him highly to others.

"Urban 2"

Bodyart by Ilmir

You may find Rust2D at : his official site, photosight.ru, deviantART, Model Mayhem.

Art Model Milena

" My inspiration sources ? The beauty around me. I can't escape it, it is always around me."

And he's right ! Of course. Beauty is everywhere.

Rust2D lives in Moscow, Russia, this country so rich of fabulous artists.

Rust2D is a 30 years old renowned photographer... Only 30... I let you imagine what will be his work in the long future he has.

It took me several days to search the best words to introduce his art. And much more to choose the photographies that could give you the best vision of his prodigious talent. I know his work since 8 years, because he's everywhere on the web, and I'm always surprised by the power of his imagination.

"Money"
Art Model Shima

Rust2D is an accomplished and worldwide recognized artist, firmly contemporary.

Like Nikola Borissov or François Benveniste, two Masters who contribute since the beginning of this site, Rust2D is a wonderful portraitist and a true composer.

Lighting, settings, compositions, expressions (emotions !), details, in color or B/W, and always disregarding conventions, we see a true signature in each of his pieces of art. Sophisticated or minimalist, he shows an inexhaustible curiosity and an inventiveness that bring us the very best, his very best.

Thanks a lot for your trust.

Now, let's hear the artist :

"Chill"

" I liked to draw when I was a child. After ten years of drawing (most of the time copying the old masters), I began to win some money from my art.

In 2001, I bought my first camera and started to push the button. However, for the first half of the year, I didn't shot one good photography, although I did it everyday, and never lost my hope.

In 2002, I was invited in a children' musical production. The scenographer and producer asked me to make some photos of the young artists for a booklet.

I had a session with a young actress with huge green eyes. She was really beautiful... And when I printed my first picture of her, I was so impressed that I literally climbed down from the wall to the floor and looked at it during 3 hours...

It gave me shivers, a good sign that explained me what I could do in the future.
At this moment, I think I've understood and found my way.

"Desire"
Endless Fantazma project

When I started I liked only beautiful faces and luxury elegant poses. At this time I didn't think about the backgrounds and a good lighting. If compositions and prettiness of the models satisfied my appetites, I thought my shot was really good.

Then I started to shot in studio. I tried to "eat" the faces and bodies with deep shadow and began my experiments with colour filters and different lightning schemes, and liked it most.

After a few years of endless shootings, I've understood that shots with interesting ideas are much better than pictures with only sensual and beautiful girls... Better later than never. So I've started to write scenaries for my sessions.

"Flying heal"

I often prefer to work with my make-up and hair artist and stylist. And I don't grudge time and money and don't spare myself to generate new interesting colour or b&w rectangle.

It's really cool to live one-day-life with a new person and be really open with him. It's like a blood transfusion, an exchange of energy and sex with an human you will never meet again.

I think courtesy kills photography, people continuing to display their civil smiles and showing their control on situation. And their false is truly showed on pictures. Photogenic people don't mean pretty-faced people. Photogenic people are in harmony with themselves. And, of course, if you want to make your name in Photography, you need to work only with the most charismatic persons.

So you need cruising and make of your life a big adventure.

You also have often to go away from all those who surround you, and that you like, to take new impressions from new people. You don't need to hold somebody with you. You must be rolling stone with lenses. That's how I'm living. I know one man who's walking down the street with the eyes shut. Now I begin to understand him : don't be afraid to be open and funny, on the thin line between the clown and the joker.

My projects ?

"Black smoka"
Fantazma series

This spring I've finished my first music video as a director, editor and cutter. Now, I'm writing a new scenary and drawing the frames.

This summer I want to make my first short movie, which is called "Body-Shop".

I also want to finish my photo-album which I've collected already 2 last years. The idea is to make from two frames - third meaning... It's really hard to put together left and right frames with such a concept. Here are my plans for this summer."
