" My inspiration sources ? The beauty around me. I can't escape it, it is always around me.

When I started I liked only beautiful faces and luxury elegant poses. At this time I didn't think about the backgrounds and a good lighting. If compositions and prettiness of the models satisfied my appetites, I thought my shot was really good. Then I started to shot in studio. I tried to "eat" the faces and bodies with deep shadow and began my experiments with colour filters and different lightning schemes, and liked it most.

After a few years of endless shootings, I've understood that shots with interesting ideas are much better than pictures with only sensual and beautiful girls... Better later than never. So I've started to write scenaries for my sessions.

A new member of Univers d'Artistes

Carlotta Dongar is a renowned photographer and water-colourist from Martinique after long years of travels all around the world. 

She sent me a lot of high res photographies when I told her I would love to exhibit her beautiful work. I'm so happy and proud of her enthusiasm. 

Of course, and as usual, I have had to make a choice. After a long meeting with myself in my conference room, all the photographies on the floor like my beloved Carrie Leigh did it before to publish my friends, I choosed her impressive and emotional portraits of Ange Bonello. Carlotta Dongar has captured his essence in a long and inspired series. 

And as she is multi-talented artist, I have added some other facets of his work.

Carlotta, you are sweet and lovely. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your joy and your confidence. Welcome on board ! 😊

By herself : 

Issue d’études universitaires en Art et Archéologie à l’Université d’Ottawa, j’ai étudié les arts et la photo dans le cadre des deux programmes que j’avais choisi. Après avoir oeuvré pendant de nombreuses années comme professeur d’arts visuels dans différents lycées de l’ouest canadien et au Québec, j’ai rejoint les Antilles-Guyane où j’ai privilégié la photo comme moyen d’expression.

Mes photos reflètent mon amour pour l’aquarelle et c’est l’effet recherché: le photo-aquarellisme, terme que j’ai créé pour décrire mon art: faire des aquarelles avec mon appareil photo. 

Des dialogues entre la lumière et ses contrastes, les couleurs et des des échanges visuels entre les formes et les graphismes de la nature.

Ma première intention photographique se rattache à Ange Bonello, l'être qu'il est au plus profond de lui, son message, sa cohésion avec son art, ses arts, sa sensibilité et son expression du monde contemporain qui l'habite avec tant d'élégance et de mouvance. On ne peut être indifférent à cet homme doué de milles facettes colorées et intenses tel un phare dans l'obscurantisme actuel.

Ma seconde intention photographique est de montrer au maximum les émotions qui émanent de ce corps. Pour ce shooting ma technicité en macro, qui est ma préférence en photographie, m'a servie de guide et j'ai cherché à ne regarder que certains aspects du corps et à les mettre en évidence plutôt que de prendre en photo des 'scènes' dans leur intégralité.

J'ai opté ici pour une approche très intimiste, très 'macro' et surtout très sensible à tout mouvement de Ange. 

Favorisant tantôt le visage, tantôt le torse, tantôt les jambes et le tout au gré de ses mouvements que je scrutais à la loupe, j'ai attendu ces petits instants furtifs où la vie se dessine d'elle-même sur le corps de l'artiste que j'avais en face de moi.  J'ai suivi du regard toute son évolution, dans les moindres changements de messages et dans les mouvements les plus imperceptibles. Très attentive à toute sa performance j'ai reçu en plein objectif chacune de ses émotions.

Chacune de ces photos est le résultat d'un ressenti profond et tellement insoutenable que mes mains se comportaient indépendamment de ma volonté,  comme imbibées de conscience visuelle et universelle.  

Merci Ange pour ces moments de pure splendeur artistique et de pure éternisation de l'être humain.

There is no hazard... Since some times I told myself there are not enough male nudes in Uda. Of course, it is not really my cup of tea, I prefer curves to squares, you know it since 1587 articles. And I never found photographs which touch me.

And guess what ? I was searching for a particular series I love on the site of AJ Kahn and I found these prodigious male nudes which remind me Rodin. I ask him the honor to exhibit them and he sent me these one. I am really a very lucky man and AJ Kahn a true friend since a long long time.

Thank you AJ Kahn from the botton of my heart. It is always a true honor and I am deeply proud of your indefectible confidence and your kind words.

"Approaching the male and female subjects in my photography has evolved over time.   It is my feeling that all too often both genders are depicted as stereotypes and perhaps objectified in their own way.  I believe most artists have been guilty of this to some extent, including myself.  Often times, I would portray male subjects as rugged, brawny and robust as possible. I would use hard, high contrast lighting to bring out definition and texture, broad poses that enhance strength and size of the male physique while avoiding poses that might imply vulnerability.  With female subjects, I would use much softer lighting to help smooth the skin and minimize texture. I would encourage poses that are “flattering” to the female figure as well as render them in a gracefully feminine way. 

Currently, I aspire to challenge my approach.  

I want to go beyond what pleases our acquired esthetic senses.  It is my goal to represent both subjects collectively as a celebration of humanity.  I strive to honor what it is that makes each subject unique while at the same time paying tribute to our similarities.  

I seek to explore traits that we all share to a certain extent; elegance, strength, passion, vitality, empathy, desire and introspection.  It is my hope that if we acknowledge those traits we all possess, perhaps we can find a new appreciation of the human form, no matter the gender of the subject."

Nude modelling: A Woman's World?

I can name around thirty talented and respected nude models.

 When I look at a casting I’m not suitable for, I can usually recommend someone who would be. These people are different sizes, with a varied spectrum of hair colours and styles, and range from Amazonian to pixielike. But they all lack one thing- a Y chromosome.

It isn’t that photography featuring the male nude doesn’t exist, for it does; but where are the subjects of these pictures and why aren’t they internationally renowned for their work? Why don’t we know who they are?

One reason is that for many of them, nudes are a “once in while” thing and they mostly focus on other work as there is such a low demand for nudity (certainly this is true of the male models I spoke to on networking sites). Others are fitness professionals or dancers modelling in between rehearsals- which appears to explain the lack of diversity among men in nude photographs. While skin colour differs, the men often have similar physiques and photos tend to be dynamic action shots with a focus on musculature.

Even while searching for photos to illustrate this piece, I found many nude men(!) but comparatively few good images of them; and of those, the only body type depicted was athletic. Several photographers even state in their profiles that they don’t photograph men. Ever.

And to be fair to them, I have seen my fair share of shocking “art nudes”- mostly the ubiquitous ‘grabbing crotch’ shot, and for the daring, the ‘close up penis-through-pants’ shot. With so little imagination and variety in photographs of this type, it is not surprising that the demand for prints and coffee-table books featuring the male nude is much smaller compared to ones with female nudes.

Some believe that female curves lend themselves to art better than male bodies. 

Some feel that male genitals must be covered or concealed in order for the image to be artistic, as opposed to pornographic. Not long ago, a man with photographs of nude men in his house would be assumed gay and judged unfavourably based on this. The prejudice is lessening, but the assumption is not gone entirely.

These are just some of many possible reasons why ‘top nude model’ lists never include men, but I can’t help but think that they would be discarded immediately if a model with talent, unique looks and ambition enough to make his name known emerged.

In June 2007, Anya wrote :

" I am a model not a photographer. Some day I will be perhaps. I myself treat my modeling more like a performance art than anything else."

One month later :

" Well, I guess I can no longer say that I am just a model. I'm trying myself out in photography and something or other is coming out." 

Quickly followed by :

" I know I have to find the next step. Which is always the hardest to take."

And she's working hard to find her style, full of hope, or loosing her confidence, but learning day after day her art with love and passion, suffering like a true artist. That's the way...

Dear Anya, how did your passion for photography begin ?

I decided to try modeling as soon as I turned 18. I joined Model Mayhem and soon found Jason Fassnacht, who was a fine art nude photographer in the area.

After having shoots with him, I got into modeling, and learned things about studio photography from watching.

When I felt ready, I picked up the camera myself, and became the photographer. I feel that it is important to learn both sides of anything you do.



How did you get into nude art photography ?

From modeling nude, I opened up a lot to appreciate and accept myself and others. "The undressed is vulgar. The nude is pure", I read that and understood it. And since then I've been impressed, fascinated, and attracted to the human body, I wanted to explore what I could do with it as works of art.

You're actually learning your art, isn'it ?

I'm currently studying sculpture at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. When it comes to photography, however, I prefer to lear from one-on-one experiences.


How long could you be far from your camera ?

I actually don't have a camera at the moment. I'm lucky to have Krista Muller allow me to use her studio and equipment when needed. Also, I spend a couple of weeks at Raven Laughter's house last summer, using his camera to photograph his lovely wife and learning the Photoshop techniques he uses.

Who are your greatest inspirators ?

Greatest ? I don't know. I have so many people that inspire me all the time, and sometimes, when the moments just right, I can use their inspiration in my work.

The photographers I've modeled for inspire me a lot. Besides the ones I've mentioned, there's A.J. Kahn, Andrew Kaiser, Haleh Bryan... All of them I watch and learn from. I'm sort of a voyeur when it comes to being inspired and learning from others. I just watch what they do and try to understand their thought process.


I know you're still searching your style...

I definitely don't have my style yet. I'm still young, everything I do is hit or miss. If I'm lucky, it's mostly a hit. But I have so many things to try before I find my own style.

You'll find it ! Anyway, and today, what is your process of creation ? Do you plan every details ?

I mostly deal with photography the way I live my life : in the moment. I've noticed that when I plan ahead, a lot of time, it does not go in sync with the energy the person is letting off, and no matter what is done afterwards, the image is a miss. So I make decisions quickly as to how to approach the subject, and the concept it is demonstrating. Sometimes, I just go with the flow and the main idea doesn't hit me until I'm editing the photo. I believe a lot of it just has to do with the energies of the photographer and model flowing together to create one whole thing.

Just like me with my words... Do you feel particularly inspired by a type of location ?

I'm most comfortable in a studio at the moment, as my greatest knowledge is of studio lighting. But I'm definitely interested in expanding that to shooting in other locations among nature.


What are your preferences ?

 It all depends of course. Some images look better in color, while others look better in black and white. The black and white does have a more classic feel to it, though. But like I said, it depends on what is desired from the outcome.

Miya is absolutely amazing ! She will be anything you want her to, and her facial expressions have a great range.

Not tired ?! Great... Have you a special project, some challenges you're dreaming about in a near future ?

I don't plan ahead too much. There's a lot of things I want to do, but I don't want to ruin attempting them until the moments right. Everything I'm shooting right now is inspired by the model on the spot.

I'm just starting out as a photographer, so I don't have a lot of work finished yet. I do want to go forth with this and see what I can do with the body, and how I can convey it to others.
