"New York, New York" by Gary Breckheimer with St Merrique

I’ve shot most forms of nude photography, in both the studio and on location, but I must say that the rush I get shooting on the streets and in public places does not compare to anything, not even the best drugs ! (Joke)

"New York, New York"

"See agent"

When I’m on the streets on location nothing is left to chance. I am completely in control. I know the exact location, the pose, the lighting, etc. I am definitely not looking for any input from the model or crew.

I predominantly focus on the juxtaposition of the female form vs. environment with over tones of erotica.

"Naked Ambition" Series, David LeBeck and St Merrique

"Naked Ambition" Series

David LeBeck, in memory
 Art Model St Merrique

2009
David, what do you see in your series ?

I guess the message is the sensuality of the creative act made manifest by her nudity and her body language.

The concept was something we came up with together, She wanted to be photographed with her type writer and I felt that a "Film Noir" look fit her looks, and the age of the typewriter

How did you create it ?

Well She lugged the type writer over the night before and we talked about the interest she herself has in Film Noir, at least the look. She's never seen any of the great films. I do have to educate her o that score. Maybe a double feature of "The Big Sleep" and either "Out of the Past" or "Double Indemnity" !

I bought her the hat she wears in the set the second time I met her when we were out looking for a spanish shawl for a set we wanted to do in homage to Alfred Cheney Johnston, the great photographer famous for photographing Ziegfeld Girls and other broadway stars nude and Hollywood stars in the nude when they were still showgirls in New York City. Well we never found that shawl.

I thought the concept of her sitting nude at her table writing with her masculine clothes (actually some of my clothes) thrown down to the side as she doffed them was a cool and interesting concept. The tie was her idea and it works to conceal and to reveal her femininity.

The blossoming of her womanly sensuality as she expresses the sensual feelings that she is writing about.

So we waited until the sun Had gone down and I made up the set using my art deco table lamp and my art deco sofa. The table is IKEA but it works. I wish I had a proper chair.

I lit it using the table lamp on the table and another table lamp for fill to the left of the camera in front of me. I had to use a tripod as even though I set the exposure index at 400 I wanted to shoot at F.8. Later I bit the bullet and went whole hog to EI: 3200 and wide open, F.2.8 so I could hand hold the rest of the set. I had a hell of a time focusing though.

What is your favourite photo in the series ?

My favourite is actually two. First is St Merrique 3, Naked Ambition 422. I love the look she gives the camera as if she was the narrator, a sort of naked female Phillip Marlowe about to take us into a world sordid and sexual. Dark and mysterious !

Then I love this one : St Merrique 3, Naked Ambition 397. The sensuality of her body language, the subtlety of her explicit nudity, her expression of near ecstasy !

A wonderful team : St Merrique and Adrian Holmes

St Merrique works so much with so many great photographers that I was unable to choose the most beautiful photographs, they all are, in her blog that she often feeds with grace and simplicity.

So, after 4 hours of pure admiration,  I decided to show you her infinite talent with Adrian Holmes, an Art Photographer I recently met on Facebook. As you will see, the result of their work is simply splendid. So much beauty still gives me hope in humanity.

Do I still need to present St Merrique ? She is my close friend, she is splendid, she has a beautiful soul :

" I'm a nature girl and am passionate about anything that represents growth, change, and enlightenment to the higher self. Being at one with Earth and giving back the love she has given us, going back to our roots, self-realization, birth, reincarnation, death and rebirth, the thinner lines between surrealism and the coffee we stir every morning. Don't forget yourself."

I love her from the bottom of my heart. Since 8 years, all our messages are full of tenderness and joy. She is on my wall with the song she wrote for me... Look at up right above my books. She wanted to visit me this summer in Marseille, France, but she is so busy. One day perhaps, but soon my Muse because I'm beginning to open my wings, il est venu le temps des mots de lumière, des mots aux ailes déployées.

If you discover  St Merrique, what is impossible, you will find all of her in the 10 articles I wrote with her.

But who is Adrian Holmes ?

A kind man I am very honored to introduce. Thank you Adrian for your ok! which touched me.
"Photography is my passion. It is my medium for expression and my method of sharing my view of the world around me.
My specialities include: portraits, fine art, architectural (interiors and exteriors).
I have been influenced by many of the well known photographers and artists from the past and present. Annie Leibovitz, Andreas Gursky, Helmut Newton and Richard Avedon are amongst my favourites. My greatest inspiration however, comes from simply observing the world around me, the natural world in particular.
I currently provide professional services to a wide range of clientèle, from private/commercial portrait bookings to architects and interior designers. I work with a fantastic team of assistants and digital artists, which allows me to expertly complete commissions both large and small."

"Depicting the nude human form in art is not new, it is as old as art itself. One of my favorite lines regarding nudity comes from an episode of Seinfeld . When the subject of female vs. male nudity comes up, Elaine (I’m paraphrasing) compares the female form to “a work of art” while comparing the male form to “an SUV”. I found that not only funny, but quite poignant.
My photographs are stories of an appreciation for women, as well as a study of the beauty of form and light.

A unique Exhibition

Art-Models Muses, we love you

Since the publication of this article in 2010, updated in 2015, some of these artists are retired from the job. Good luck my sweet friends !

Gerhardt Thompson :

Regarding the models there are not enough words.

Without them there would be just a landscape, without their passion and expression there would be just a pretty face and for me the beauty of a woman is not in their physical attributes instead in what they have to share through self confidence, expression, understanding and trust.

Each of the models I work with share natural beauty, there is never any make up and I have to remind them not to do their nails, there is nothing artificial just body language and it is my job to look closely at feelings, light, mood and to integrate the sum of these parts. These young ladies are bright and their abilities should never go unquestioned. The models work hard and give 200% of themselves.

It is for this reason that I must do my very best for them each time I pick up my camera. They have my utmost respect !" Gerhardt Thompson

I can't say enough about how incredibly fortunate I am to have the opportunity to work with these wonderful people. Their patience and understanding and trust are all invaluable to making the images work so well. I've said before, if it wasn't for them, I would only have a large collection of well lit and quite boring paper backdrops ! Not to play any favorites, but there are a few people who have supported my work with their incredible talent and friendship. Scott Nichol

I photograph the female figure for many reasons.  I believe the female body is the original aesthetic object, the source of all our ideas of what is beautiful.  Therefore, the female figure provides the perfect subject matter, just as it has been an important subject since the beginnings of art. I work with people that are more than models, they are truly the main subject of the image - these people bare their soul, more than their bodies, they explore their boundaries, their freedoms and freely give of their emotions as well as their poses. Without these wonderfully understanding artists, there is no hope of Art ever being created. Beau Nestor

What makes you beautiful is something much deeper than skin
Than your arms, breasts, thighs and unspeakable gems
It's what you show but don't speak, time and again
It's something much greater… It's the you that's within

I seldom work with professional models, concentrating on 'normal' women. Most of my models haven't posed nude before and experience a real shift in self confidence as a result of working with me. I'm blessed with a beautiful and tolerant partner who models for me on a regular basis and assists on many shoots. I'm fortunate to have the trust of so many women without whom I would not be able to create. My shoots are a collaboration and I attempt to capture something of the models personality in all my work.
