An interview of Ashok

Ashok is from  Mumbai, India.  There are very, very few photographers in India who shoot nudes.

How and when did your passion for photography begin ?

I started young when in school and in the early 70’s… My first camera was a Zeiss Ikon super Ikonta IV which is a 120 roll film camera taking 12 square images per roll. This was given to me by my uncle who no longer used it. Back then it was a fairly advanced camera with a meter and if I remember right a Tessar f 3.5 lens fixed to bellows. I loved it.

I soon moved to a Minolta SRT 101 with a normal lens and started exploring 35mm mainly b/w. Medium format and large format was the accepted standard back then. About the same time I teamed up with a friend who was also passionate about photography to set up a wet darkroom to develop and make our own prints.
It wasn’t long before I kept seeing the Nikon F and Nikkormat advertisements in photography magazines and saved up just enough to get my hands on a Nikkormat FTn with a 50mm f1.4 lens. Since then I have been committed to Nikon and currently use a Nikon D100 with a 14mm, 80-200 f2.8 nikon zoom and a 24-85 f 2.8 nikon lens. This gives me all the focal lengths I need and covers the vast majority of my needs. I have not felt the need to  get additional lenses. My tripod is a Manfrotto which is somewhat heavy with a pan and tilt head.

Do you make anything else aside from nudes ?

Aside from nudes I shoot portraits, landscapes. seascapes, and travel images. India is colourful. There are so many festivals, places and people.. it’s a big country. My favourite part of India is Rajasthan for the festivals, the desert and the colour as also Kerala for the canals and greenery. There is so much of India I have yet to see.

Film or digital ? Maybe both ?

I think digital is wonderful. The initial investment is high for someone who does not have an income from photography but the convenience and ability to instantly view your images is a big plus. It’s a great learning tool as you can correct your mistakes while you still have the chance. Digital today is better than film. The quality, color and saturation is better than film and the modern sensors have the ability to almost see in the dark. A 6 MP camera is the minimum one needs to produce high quality work that can be printed to reasonably large sizes such as 20x30 inches. I no longer  shoot film. Processing facilities are limited and costs increasing.

Every photographer has his signature, his personal touch (and yours is very clear) that makes all the difference. I know how difficult it is to do so, but how would you describe your photographic style ?

I am not sure that I have one specific style. My work has been restricted by the environment as I explained separately here. Hence my style if you can call it that, is images with light and shadow that show the lines and shapes. They tend to be low key.

I like converting my images to black white to get a range of tones. It makes the image more effective. I like simple straight forward images against a plain background so you can focus your attention on the main subject

More recently I have tried modifying images by merging several images as well as using textures and blending modes. Patterns are also interesting especially on a nude against a dark background. You got to try different combinations to create something new.

You wrote to me "The conditions here are different and art nude is still a new field being explored by photographers". From my trips to India I remember that the celebration of sensuality is part of Indian culture. For example one sees sensual images on the walls of some temples...

India is a country with a long history going back well over a 1000 years. Yet we remain largely a conservative society. Most photographers I have met have not shot nudes either because they don’t know what its all about or more likely because they are unable to find anyone to model. Even artists find it very difficult to find a model. A select few have been successful in this area. There is a very fine line dividing art and pornography.

The Kamasutra was written in India. The temples of Khajurahao built in 950 -1050 AD with their erotic carvings are today a UNESCO heritage sight. It's in the mind and how you perceive such carvings and photographs.

In what themes do you find inspiration ?

As far as themes go I enjoy shooting nudes. Also travel.

What locations do you prefer to use? You seem to have a large preference for the studio

My main location so far for shooting nudes has been indoors. Many reasons for this. I live in Mumbai (earlier known as Bombay) in India and it’s a very crowded city with a population of over 20 million.

There are very few places within reasonable driving distance where one can get privacy to do a nude photo shoot. I would love to try nudes or lingerie shoots on a beach or the nude in the landscape. Landscapes and seascapes are among my favourite images and combining that with nudes would be very interesting. Maybe later this year or the next I may attend a workshop abroad to shoot such images.

My images look like studio shots but infact they are mostly shot in available light. Only very few images here are studio shot in the sense that lights/strobe were used. When I bought an apartment many years ago, one of the first things I noticed was the window light. The apartment is high up on the top floor and the neighbouring building is painted white which reflects the beautifull light from the sky into my living room. I can control the extent of the light by moving the sliding windows to the left or right. I also have a small window on the other side and in the evening the setting sun comes through the little window to create lovely side light or back light on the model. All this together makes the impression the image is studio lit.

I have very limited experience in studio lighting and would like to learn more. This needs practice and I plan to use the photography club studio for this. It takes a lot of practice as well as trial and error.

Tell us about your art models:

My models are not pro models ie they do not model for a fee. After a lot of searching and persuasion I have been privileged to have friends who have an interest in art and appreciate some of my work, wether nudes, landscapes or portraits and agree to model. Indian women are conservative and modeling is an option only a few pursue .

Fine art nude is little understood and fewer models practice in this part of the world. There are no web sites where one can approach a model. Its all by word of mouth. Most models do not want their images published as they want to remain anonymous.

I am not looking for any specific body type or age and can work with all shapes be it slim or heavier built. As my interest is more in shapes and curves, light and shadow I am not restricted to using a slim body type only.

There is a freshness and innocence about using amateur models. I don’t direct them too much but work with some basic poses, ideas and let it flow from there. I also start by shooting them dressed and slowly get down to topless images with their thong or knickers still on. There is no pressure to start by shooting nudes. The first sessions usually are stiff and awkward but as they get comfortable I start getting better images. Needless to say there is a high rejection ratio as we work towards that special moment when everything comes together.. I have also found that with more than one session the model begins to understand what you are looking for. From time to time I let the model see the RAW captures on the camera display. It motivates them and they can also see how they look. Often they come with ideas and props that become successful images.

Another difficult question : what is your own favourite photograph ?

Indeed a difficult question but before I answer that let me start by saying that my favourite lighting is window light and a fill with a reflector. This produces lovely images especially in black & white. It's difficult to pick one particular favourite as there are many I like.

What do you consider your greatest photographic accomplishment to this point, and what is your biggest aspiration ?

I am completely self thought. I read a lot and internet is great source of articles and information on photography. I would like to do a book on nudes with an Indian theme. I don’t know if this will happen but I hope so.

Have you some challenges (publications, exhibitions) you're dreaming about in a near future ?

I have had some work published before in magazines but those have been articles and images on Indian culture, travel etc. In the early years of my photography I participated in many national and international exhibitions with some awards and publications in catalogues etc.. this was in the pre digital era. I had to discontinue this due to rising costs.

At this time I am discussing a one man show of my work in Bangkok, mainly Indian portraits, travel, landscapes and seascapes. I am hopefull this will materialize.

This is the very first interview on a global web site specializing in art nudes and it’s a great honour to have my work selected to be viewed by a wider audience. There are many photographers on this web site whose work I greatly admire.

What is your best way to promote your work ?

I am not sure if in India galleries are ready for a one man show of nudes. Its perhaps too early for that. But attitudes are changing with exposure to global trends. I would like to participate in group shows overseas. Both America and Europe have opportunities for such exhibitions where established artists come forward to exhibit. Specialist art nude magazines could be another option as well.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to work in your genre, in your country ?

Its taken me a very long time to find women who are willing to model. Its not easy. So patience is the very first requirement. Like they say…. The first time is always difficult. Once you have some work to show, people understand what you do and what sort of images you shoot. Recommendation helps greatly. I think Indian women are lovely and the beautifull eyes, dark hair and skin tones make wonderfull subjects. You just got to find them !!

Most important is to ensure that you are discreet and that the pictures do not end up in the wrong places.

Is there a question nobody has ever asked you and you would like to answer ?

I have been keenly watching the digital technology develop. The new medium format digital is slowly becoming more affordable and I may consider to add a 645 digital camera and a couple of lenses to my kit. I quite like the Pentax 645 AFD. Its still not available in India. A kit like that is a big decision.

Any message you’d like to leave for our readers ?

I am always looking for models and if any readers are travelling to this part of the world then I look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you Ashok. We wish you all the very best in your pursuit of art

Jose Manchado's interview

" The first thing I teach to a new model it's respect. If the model don't feel secure in a shooting, she won't make the things right. The models are always my friends because we work together in the picture and it ends better with two minds on it."

Jose, tell us how did your passion for photography begin ?

There is 3 years ago, making portraits for my friends. Then making amateur nudes, I quickly found that showing the sex is too easy and doesn't please to the models. As my models are mostly female, I learned to hide the sex with grace.

I think an elegant nude is really better when you don't show the entire nude body. And when I want some more sensual picts, I never show the body, only the lips, the fingers, the face, only parts who let us imagine much more... It's really funny to watch the face of people during my exhibitions.

Did you learn your art at school ?

No, I just kill the photographers asking too many questions, ha ha ha !

"Brito style"
Art Model Alma

You're so prolific !... How long could you be far from your camera ?

 No more than 1 week.

Who are your greatest inspirators ?

Well, now I'm trying to improve my skills about the light. So I'm always watching picts, thinking how to make the same light set. And now, working on a new project called "Warrior women", I'm watching at my old illustration books and magazines, metal hurlant, comics, 1984...

"Let me wake up into your dream"
Art Model Beam

Your favorite photographers ?

Ufff ! Too much on my list, Helmut Newton, Herb Ritts, Eugenio Recuenco, André Brito...

I know how much this question is difficult, but what words will you use to define your style ?

I don't have style... I think to have a style it's to make the same things, even if it's with different models in different places. For me, that's really boring.

I'm always trying to learn from other great photographers, because it makes the things more funny, more complicated. I never stop learning.

"Nude into a square crop"

"My treasure"
Art Model Alex

What is your favorite theme ?

Outdoors nudes, in the nature or abandoned places.

I often try to integrate the nude figure into the scene so you can view first the scene and later the nude figure.

Is your photography mostly nudes ?

No, the most part of my weekends I shoot at a motorcycle circuit.

What is your process of creation ? Do you plan every details or is it improvisation from the beginning to the end ?

I explain to the model the idea for every shoot, with drawings or picts, with the pose, the light and all things that we'll use (fabrics, masks, etc.). So, we work the most part of the time with a script. Sometimes without, but it's rare.

"Sit down baby"

Do you feel particularly inspired by a type of location ?

Yes, I love the old factories and the irish pubs.

"Dead of Venus 02"

"Tongue"
Art Model Elsa

What are your preferences, indoor, outdoor, lights, bw, color ?

Indoor flash light, outdoor natural light, with soft flashlight or dark with hard flash light. When I make a good balance of color, I leave it into color, if not I transform into b&w. I like making darker or lighten the channels red and yellow.

I know how much you respect your models. Some words about them ?

I try to not work with professional models because they don't work well for my camera, only using one face, they don't express the feelings I'm waiting.

I prefer working with normal people and get the best part of them.

"Bea way of sword"
Art Model Bea

A shooting that you particularly liked ?

The last spring I made a shoot with the best photographer of Portugal, André Brito, 2 days, 6 models, a lot of different sets... It was hard and funny.

How do you feel at the end of a shooting ?

When it's a good shoot, I feel sad because the magic of the light and the model is ended. I feel tired, dirty (many times I have to rest) but with a big smile and wonderful picts into my cf card.

Have you a special project, some challenges you're dreaming about in a near future ?

I'm working on my projects "Wintermute" and "Warrior women". I'm also collaborating into a fashion shoot with 3 designers and a lot of models. It will be a crazy organization but I'm sure that it will be funny !

"Creation 4th version"

"Creating a new world"

"Creation"
Art Model Suse Kew

Is your next exhibition scheduled ?

No. My last exhibition was at Nimes, France, in a gay pub, just for meeting friends, not for sale my prints.

"My name it's madness"
Art Model Virginia

"Paradiso perduto"

You still don't have published a book, I believe. Maybe have you been published in magazines ?

I have picts into magazines of bikes, music, but they're aren't very known. Today I'm collaborating with the venezuelan magazine Exo2.

Besides shooting, another passion ?

My house and my girlfriend ! But I don't have many time with my 2 works. My personal life is really complicated !

A message to send ?
Work hard, check the lights, see the model expressions, work the composition, the background, and shoot !

Thanks you very much Jose !

A series with Gina Gerson

It is not a good one but maybe the best for this kind of actress. She's too appealing, too erotic and the photographer focused on her beautiful feet, she knows it and she loves them.

So why I publish it ?? Because this series has been worked and some photos deserve a look. Again it's the best I found, better than all the photos of Clara Morgane. UdA is opened to all genres, here is a new one I didn't know.

For Playboy

Writing "Fake Art 1 and 2", I was obliged to see the stars' body in order to compare the respect of their proportions with the fakes. And I saw these incredible pictures.

I was speechless before to search why they dress and undress like that with such a bad taste.

Actually it seems it's an obligation for a female celebrity to exhibit herself in order to become and to stay a star, but also :
  • a logical exhibitionist tendance,
  • and/or the order of their agent to promote their last movie,
  • and/or to do the buzz to find a role,
  • and the desesperate need to be loved, coming from a difficult childhood without enough love, all is a question of love : "look at me ! see me ! I exist... Love me."

In my opinion, it's certainly all together and the last point is the first. All we need is love.

A French "singer" posed nude to promote her new album

As you'll "admire" it, some stars love to show all and repeat it with an evident and compulsive pleasure : Britney Spears, Christina Ricci, Emma Watson, JLH, Jennifer Aniston, Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus...

A realistic declaration :

For the best of rare ones, have a look at The shining light of 110 stars and at 40 celebrities who did some very good photoshoots.

Anyway, it needs a lot of courage and madness to dare such exhibitions. Of course, we are numerous to appreciate but I still wonder what they think when they look at herself in the mirror before to leave home for a public event ?...

Wikipedia, Exhibitionism :
Exhibitionism is the act of exposing in a public or semi-public context those parts of one's body that are not normally exposed, for example the breasts, genitals or buttocks.
The practice may arise from a desire or compulsion to expose themselves in such a manner to groups of friends or acquaintances or to strangers for their amusement or sexual satisfaction or to shock the bystander.
Various types of behavior are classified as exhibitionism :
- Anasyrma: the lifting of the skirt when not wearing underwear, to expose genitals.
- Flashing: the momentary display of bare female breasts by a woman with an up-and-down lifting of the shirt and/or bra or the exposure of a man's or woman's genitalia.

JLH, an exhibitionist who assumes

From a small breast to a large, there are 10 years between both, what can explain her change of size.

No informations about a plastic surgery she affirms she never did. I believe her.

Before the show, to demonstrate the exhibitionism, Jennifer Love Hewitt told :

"I’m fascinated with the “Jennifer Love Hewitt breast” sites, it makes me laugh. If they focus on my breasts, it’s fine with me ! My breasts have a career of their own."

Despite her love for her breast, JLH never posed nude what is an exploit in the cruel Hollywood. Her sincerity and her inner strength deserve an Oscar.

About her breast page, she is surely very happy ! In 2017, it was the up beginning of her "Jennifer Love Hewitt breast" first page on Google. You see 5 fakes because she's the number 1 of the most faked celebrities (one very good up left) :

http://universdartistes.blogspot.fr/search/label/Fake%20Art

Mes constatations :

2 The Nudes Horror Show
Un grand merci à Gakatan

A lot of stars posed nude or nude-non-nude with a regular horrible taste. The poses are stupid, the results too erotic and appealing and they don't hide their "fame". I talked about buzz and exhibitionism so no need to repeat, here are the evidences. Of course, the photographers are bad and/or certainly afraid and/or bad directed.

Anyway, the worst is that these stars said yes for their publication, maybe obliged, maybe drunk and more... but maybe proud of their ugly photographs. Who knows ?

For more, search by yourself but be careful because of the numerous fakes, sometimes so good that you won't make the difference, I call these pieces of art "Art Fake". To avoid them, try in BW instead of colors.

Art Fake : des photo-compositions tellement bien faites qu'elles leur sont attribuées :

Incroyable !

Oui selon une étude menée par l’Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism.

The strange case of Calista Flockhart

"During the 1998 Emmy Awards, just one year after her hit Fox show began, the actress appeared on the red carpet looking dangerously thin. This spawned eating disorder rumors to which Flockhart denied : ‘I guess I don't know the exact definition of anorexia’ she told People in 1998. In 2006, The Mirror reported that Flockhart had also come clean about her struggles with weight :
"I started under-eating, over-exercising, pushing myself too hard and brutalising my immune system. I guess I just didn't find the time to eat. I am much more healthy these days."

Why did she these photographs ? How could she accept the text and signed for the publication ? Did she regret ?...

I'm without answer. All below is stupid, horrible, ugly, sordid. I'm sorry for her. She didn't know or she needed to eat. I deeply hope it.

But we all make errors, isn't it ? So, let's forgive and laugh of her little slip !

3 Stolen images or paid paparizzi ?

There are true stolen photo and it's a cruel harassment of public figures and celebrities, especially with their children.

To be famous is often a nightmare and a golden jail. It's the ransom of the glory, the price to pay.

That said, we all know that some celebrities pay the paparazzi to make the covers of trash gossip magazines. I found these photos and I let you judge if they are really stolen. For some, the answer is evident and I'm nor far to think that there are a lot of false steals.

A good thing in the bad, these photos are not retouched. At least I believe it, because when they pay the paparazzi, all become possible before their publications.

Wikipedia Paparazzi :
"Paparazzi are independent photographers who take pictures of high-profile people, such as athletes, entertainers, politicians and other celebrities, typically while subjects go about their usual life routines. Paparazzi tend to make a living by selling their photographs to media outlets focusing on tabloid journalism and sensationalism (such as gossip magazines)."

4 Forbes : the pay disparity actors/actresses

The World's Highest-Paid Actors And Actresses 2017

A gender pay gap persists in Hollywood, even among elite earners: The top 10 actors banked a cumulative $488.5 million--nearly three times the $172.5 million combined total of the 10 top-earning women. While only three actresses made more than $20 million in 12 months, 16 actors broached the mark.

This pay disparity is due, in part, to roles: There are simply fewer main female characters in the superhero movies and blockbusters that pay the sizeable backend profits that result in leading men's large paydays, or the franchise sequels that permit aggressive negotiation for future installments. According to a 2016 study, women comprise just 28.7% of all speaking roles in movies.

Earnings estimates are based on data from Nielsen, ComScore, Box Office Mojo and IMDB, as well as interviews with industry insiders. All figures are pretax and scored between June 1, 2016, and June 1, 2017; fees for agents, managers and lawyers are not deducted.

1. Mark Wahlberg, $68 million
2. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, $65 million
3. Vin Diesel, $54.5 million
4. Adam Sandler, $50.5 million
5. Jackie Chan, $49 million
