Vanessa Tarachin is an underwater and professional Art nude model, a painter, a true poet (how I love that !), a dancer and a musician... To make short, she is an accomplished artist, body and soul devoted to the Arts with an endless commitment and a wonderful passion.

Congratulated by all the photographers she works with, Vanessa is renowned for her grace, the way she poses with enthusiasm, and without fears. But beyond all her physical qualities, they all talk about her inner beauty... Vanessa poses as she writes a poem. And if she could read french, she'ld discover how much our words and themes are similar.

During the preparation of her first feature, she was there, near me, helping me, choosing the pictures, full of thanks for my interest, forgetting how much I'm honoured by her confidence.

I am an extremely daring and fearless model.

 I'll climb trees, walk through leach infested swamps, run barefoot through the desert, swim with sharks or even lay on broken glass.

I'll play with snakes, scorpions and spiders as if they were a cuddly pet and never say no to a messy idea like sitting in a rubbish tip just to get that perfect artistic shot... so if you have an idea that a model would normally cringe at then I'm the model for you !

When it comes to work for me its simply ; don't work but instead "create" Art that will be viewed as a masterpiece for years to come.

This is the true reason I have so much love for what I do, to reach out and touch souls without even meeting a person.

It has never been a struggle nor a pain to wake up in the morning, until today I still get butterflies before a shoot. I never get bored or run out of ideas for poses.

Simply because it has been conditioned in our minds from when we were children.

If you take a baby for instance ; it does not feel shy in any manner, and that is the way all of should have stayed. If we were all naked then rape, molestation, etc, would be uncommon as the majority would not bother about nakedness and sexual tension when seeing a person take their clothes off (clothes would be a waste of time)... it would be unheard of that in turn people would spend less time buying cloths and feeling insecure, and spend more time to love and take care of what is right.

Money will become less of a want and more of a need, and things would be much better. Just take a look at tribal people, the nudists and naturalists, do you see them killing and raping each other ?... No !

I don't know about you, but personally, there is no other liberation better then when I am naked. I feel I can breath, my soul, mind and body breaths life. I am more comfortable without then with clothes. If only everyone had the chance to feel this amazing freedom without worrying about everyone around them... but that won't ever happen... sadly enough.

How did you get started with your modeling, especially nude and figure work modeling? How old were you? How did your family feel about your decision to pursue modeling as a career?

I've always been a bit of an exhibitionist. Even when I was young my mom says she couldn't keep clothing on me. The first time I modeled nude I was 18, and it was for a friend's college photography project. I was 21 when I decided to seriously try modeling. I tried posing for artists in several different mediums before I decided that photography was where my posing interests lie. My family has always been surprisingly supportive. One of my grandmother's sisters was an art model at RISD (Rhode Island School of Design) for 40 or 50 years, so I think she broke the family in for me.

You have been featured in Playboy, how has that affected your life and your modeling career?

Playboy has its ups and downs.

It gives a model a whole new market to pursue as far as signings, websites, meeting fans etc. However it isn't all it is cracked up to be. 

There is always a push to do more adult work as your fans ask for more of you. There are also a lot of crazy and potentially dangerous fans out there who will call your home at 3 in the morning or show up at your doorstep. Playboy has definitely helped give me a name in this industry and many of the best opportunities of my career have come up because their name was in my portfolio. I will say there are some people who will never see you as an art model again once you have shot for a company like Playboy.

What is your proudest accomplishment as a model?

Just being able to do this as a full time career. To be able to do what I love and make a living is a huge accomplishment.

Do you have any role models? Who are they?

Betty Page. I know it is kind of cliche but she modeled into her 40's, and she is such a legend. I think it would be so cool to be more famous 40 years after you modeled than during your actual modeling reign. I very strongly think it is likely that this could happen as the "internet model" is the new taboo and the girls who are doing this are kind of the originators of this genre of work.

You shoot a wide variety of work - from fine art nude, to glamour nude, to fashion. Do you have a preference for any specific type of modeling?

I love erotic, euro-fashion nude imagery probably more than anything else because the end product is so beautiful.

Do you ever encounter prejudice and criticism about the nude body of work you created? How do you handle it?

I do. I'm from a small hick town, and every once in a while I'll get a rude email from a high school peer saying I'm degrading myself, or saying that I should do fashion because I'm "better" than a nude model. It is frustrating that people think that selling some name brand crap is better than creating a piece of inspiring art with the human form. I generally just ignore people with this mentality-I don't need this kind of negativity in my life.

What parts of modeling are most rewarding to you, what are the parts you could do without?

I feel like there are so many rewarding situations from modeling.

Being able to inspire artists, having my face seen around the world, making a living off of what I love. I could do without the random negative critics out there, but I guess that is just part of the job.

Your modeling portfolio is absolutely phenomenal. How much input and ideas do you provide into your images and your shoots? Do you bring in your own wardrobe and styling ideas?

I put in a lot of ideas, wardrobe and styling. I love being a part of the creative process. I often get really frustrated when there is an "art director" who wont let me voice any creativity. A lot of people don't realize that no one is going to know my look and body better than me.

What are your goals, both short term, as well as long term?

I don't know really. I want to get more tear sheets, and work with more amazing artists. Long term-I suppose I just want to model until it isn't fun anymore. When that happens I would like to open my own art gallery.

If a starting model were to come to you for advice on how to establish a solid portfolio, what would you tell her?

Do trade with the best, always be professional, never flake and stay on top of your bookings! It doesn't matter how good your portfolio is if your reputation is poor for not showing up to jobs.

Would you name a few of your favorite photographers (that you worked with, or that you would like to work with)?

Some of the best I have worked with are Juan Zambrano, James Russell, Richard Warren, and Hataiiia. I love so many photographers out there. I really hope to shoot with David LaChappelle some day. His work is so vibrant and alive. I imagine working with him is a lot of fun.

Most models I have personally met, all have interesting backgrounds, education and hobbies that shows models have so much more going for them than just their look. Is there anything you could share about "Carlotta, the model", that may surprise people?

I am an artist first and foremost. I have a BFA in 3D art (ceramics and sculpture) and I made a living in college by making clothing out of condoms (http://www.carlyscondomnation.com/). Now I often make things to shoot in. Lately nipple tassels and erotic clothing have held my artistic interest.

What is the best way for people to reach you to set up a shoot with you? Any additional information you'd like to share about your approach to setting up shoots?

" Some of you will know my work from the art nude photographic category. I sometimes get requests on how to go about finding, and treating, live models. So here's some advice on how to make things run smoother when you hire a live model.

Bear in mind that the following is offered as advice only.

I'll point out now that this isn't a guarantee of getting a model to work for you. These things have worked for me, and others, here in Australia. There may be local laws you should check in your area before asking a model to pose for you. This isn't legal advice, nor is it established practice. I'm not a lawyer, please don't treat this as advice from such.

First off, one of the things a model (and this applies to males and females) wants to know is WHO are you ?

Remember, many internet models get lots of sleazy enquiries, and there are some really weird folks out there who can pass themselves off as being semi-professional. Be prepared to say who you are, e.g. "I'm a part time photographer, but I work day to day as a pastry chef."



Next thing is how much are you paying ?

Most models have fixed rates that can vary from $50 to $200 per hour for artistic nude work if you've got that in mind. Will you be paying in cash ? Can the model cite or show your work in her portfolio ? Are you prepared to pay a deposit up front ? And no- you can't "owe it to them". Payment on the day BEFORE you start work is the norm.
If you’re lucky, you’ll find a model who may model just for the art, with just a few dollars to cover expenses… but this isn’t common, so don’t expect it. And don't offer them $200, and then decide to pay half that if you don't get what YOU want. Set a fee and stick to it.

Another thing that many will want to know is are you established ? Do you have a portfolio they can view ?

Are any of your works on exhibition, or have they won prizes ? What this means is basically are you serious about what you're doing, or are you just looking for an excuse to get the model alone somewhere ?

Don't blame the model for being cautious - most of them have been burned plenty of times by sleazebags. YOU have to prove you're NOT one of the sleazy characters.

If you don't have a portfolio, don't despair - say so ! Tell the model that you're new at photographing or sculpting from a real person. Many of the models I know are quite keen to help out folks if they can, but you must say what you expect them to do beforehand.

If you want the model to pose in a cloak with arms folded, say so ; if you want them to pose naked in a bathtub full of ice cream, tell them ! Above all, don't say beforehand "you'll be fully clothed, dressed as Batgirl" and when they arrive, say "Oh, I think this would work better with you in your underwear, would you mind ?" They'll walk out the door, and won't come back. Be prepared to give references as well. If you don't have any in the sculpting / modelling industry, try your boss at work !

Give the model whatever safeguards they require.

For example, if they want to meet you a few days beforehand for coffee, why not ? It gives both of you a chance to say hi and discuss ideas. If they want to bring a chaperone or a friend, give it serious consideration ! I've worked with several models who have brought chaperones, and while they make some folks uncomfortable, I've never once had a problem.

Remember, a model who is relaxed and at ease will work so much better for you.

Other things - Where will you be working ?

If it's your home studio, be prepared to give out your address before the day. I don't know of too many models who would agree to be picked up by someone then taken to a place where no-one knows where they are. Be prepared to provide a verifiable home or studio phone number and street address, regardless if you are working at home, studio, or out on location. If it’s a studio, make sure the studio / room is well heated - you don't want the models goosebumps to show on your shots, do you ? And a model who is freezing cold won't hold a pose for long. Likewise if it's a hot day, have the airconditioning going.

Most models advertise what services they offer,

such as nude, lingerie, fashion, etc. ; ask them to do something they don't do, such as nude work, not only gets you a refusal, but gets you branded as sleazy. Word gets around very quickly - the rumour mill is faster than a broadband connection !

Make sure the model has somewhere private to change,

and have a robe on hand for them to slip into when they're on breaks. You may be paying them to pose for you, but they aren't there for you to perve on, no matter how much you're offering them.

And bear in mind that unless you're working with "life models" who often pose for art classes, most models can't hold a pose for more than a few minutes.

Even with life models, give them a break every fifteen minutes, and have coffee / tea / cold drinks / juice etc. available for them. (Hint : I haven't met a model yet who didn't love chocolate !)

Important : don’t offer your model alcohol !

It will probably give the impression that you’re trying to get them drunk, which will brand you as a sleazebag.

Do NOT engage a model who is under legal age in your area !

And if you're not sure, check the model's ID to ensure this ! Regardless of how many friends / chaperones, etc. they say they'll bring, DON'T DO IT !

If you're engaging a model to pose as Lara Croft or Dracula, tell them how many people they'll be posing for.

If you lead them to believe it's just you, and they turn up to find seven people in the room, don't be surprised if they refuse to work, and hand your money back. Let them know if you're holding a class, or it's just for your own work.

Finally, if the face of the model is going to be recognisable in the work you're doing, you may need a Model Release,

which both of you sign otherwise trying to sell your work, or exhibit it anywhere other than in your portfolio, may be illegal ! Again, check your local laws. Samples of these model releases are available on the Internet, use your favourite search engine and type in "model release" to get a few. If you're going to adopt a model release, get it checked over by a good lawyer first. Laws in Australia differ from other countries, and they vary from state to state.

Oh yeah - make sure the name the model puts on the release is her real and legal name. Many models (quite sensibly) use a pseudonym for dealing with people over the internet.

I suppose what all of this boils down to is BE HONEST AND OPEN in your dealings with models, and TREAT THEM DECENTLY.

If you hit on the model, embarrass them, ridicule them, or act sleazy, you not only may never get another one to work with you (the grapevine among models is incredible) but you may also get a visit from the local Police, and deservedly so.





REMEMBER : To have someone turn up and pose for a total stranger is a very courageous act.

If you're a relative unknown, the first time most models work with you, many will want to bring a friend or chaperone, or will ask for references to make sure you're on the level. Be ready to provide them !
