"Naked Ambition" Series, David LeBeck and St Merrique

"Naked Ambition" Series

David LeBeck, in memory
 Art Model St Merrique

2009
David, what do you see in your series ?

I guess the message is the sensuality of the creative act made manifest by her nudity and her body language.

The concept was something we came up with together, She wanted to be photographed with her type writer and I felt that a "Film Noir" look fit her looks, and the age of the typewriter

How did you create it ?

Well She lugged the type writer over the night before and we talked about the interest she herself has in Film Noir, at least the look. She's never seen any of the great films. I do have to educate her o that score. Maybe a double feature of "The Big Sleep" and either "Out of the Past" or "Double Indemnity" !

I bought her the hat she wears in the set the second time I met her when we were out looking for a spanish shawl for a set we wanted to do in homage to Alfred Cheney Johnston, the great photographer famous for photographing Ziegfeld Girls and other broadway stars nude and Hollywood stars in the nude when they were still showgirls in New York City. Well we never found that shawl.

I thought the concept of her sitting nude at her table writing with her masculine clothes (actually some of my clothes) thrown down to the side as she doffed them was a cool and interesting concept. The tie was her idea and it works to conceal and to reveal her femininity.

The blossoming of her womanly sensuality as she expresses the sensual feelings that she is writing about.

So we waited until the sun Had gone down and I made up the set using my art deco table lamp and my art deco sofa. The table is IKEA but it works. I wish I had a proper chair.

I lit it using the table lamp on the table and another table lamp for fill to the left of the camera in front of me. I had to use a tripod as even though I set the exposure index at 400 I wanted to shoot at F.8. Later I bit the bullet and went whole hog to EI: 3200 and wide open, F.2.8 so I could hand hold the rest of the set. I had a hell of a time focusing though.

What is your favourite photo in the series ?

My favourite is actually two. First is St Merrique 3, Naked Ambition 422. I love the look she gives the camera as if she was the narrator, a sort of naked female Phillip Marlowe about to take us into a world sordid and sexual. Dark and mysterious !

Then I love this one : St Merrique 3, Naked Ambition 397. The sensuality of her body language, the subtlety of her explicit nudity, her expression of near ecstasy !

David LeBeck is a photographer from Los Angeles, United States, "old enough to know better, and too old to care" as he defines himself.

Prolific artist, David has a great predilection for soft tones B&W pictures. His galleries show his mastery of composition, poses, light and shadows, remembering me the art of italian renaissance painters. After such a comparaison, it's difficult to find other words to describe the high quality of his fantastic work.

" I am a Fine Art Nude Photographer. My goal is to create Fine Art and Erotic nudes that are beautiful and powerful statements about light, and form, the beauty of Nature, and the power of Women.

I don't photograph models with artificial enhancements. I'm only interested in natural beauty.

I prefer a collaboration between creative artists to an artist and subject situation. I firmly believe that collaboration produces the best and most powerful images. When two creative people are working in tandem to achieve Synergy, the whole becomes more than the sum of its parts !"

David LeBeck by his muse Betcee May :

"I think one of the wonderful things about David's work is that he truly appreciates the honest beauty of a woman, without the gloss and pretense that so many photographers hide their subjects in.

By letting me shine through and not a photoshop filter, he is demonstrating his trust in something that goes beyond glam. He is showing Life.

These are images that make you want to crawl into them, reach out and touch, caress, smile and love with. "

by Michelle 7 :

" David LeBeck is an American art and science/medical photographer. Artistically, his main focus has been on both the beauty of nature and the drama, grit, and beauty of modern urban life.

David says his primary inspiration is the beauty found in nature and man. He's been shooting nudes for the past few years too, and has long admired artists working in the genre. The female form possesses an innate sensuality, he says, and feels it's the of the highest expressions of beauty.

" We went back to the backbone trail to catch the sunset but a ridge to the west proved to be higher than i remembered Damn! Still, we did some very different work from the last session. Betcee said she now knew how I photograph outdoors so her poses were less conventional. Then, as we lost the light I did some lovely portraits of a Very beautiful woman ! My inspiration, My Muse : The Glorious Betcee May"

With different layers of paper I fix it. Later i made some photos with my reproduction table. Finally I put it into photoshop, to sharpen and colorize it."

The kind feedback of David

"I'm always flattered when someone wishes to use any of my art for a project of theirs. It's exciting and humbling. I want to encourage it. If I can inspire as I've been inspired, that's wonderful. Thank you !"

David L. Le Beck and St Merrique, Oriental Princess series

A new series by the prolific David LeBeck with a St Merrique

" I've been so fortunate to shoot two days in a row on December 29th and 30th with two amazing and wonderful models, Maria J and St Merrique !
Both are creative in their own right and contribute fully when we work with their own vision.
Both are Beautiful and intelligent with wonderful sweet personalities !
Both are excellent with their poses, their awareness of the light and their ability to use their emotions in their work.
Both are completely comfortable in the nude.
I hope both will be an inspiration for me for years to come."

How did your passion for photography begin ?

I was always interested in photography. I loved still photography and good cinematography. My Mother was a fine artist and my dad was a pretty good amateur photographer. There just came a time when I was in College that I felt that i needed an artistic outlet. I was a lousy draftsman and Music just didn't click for me as something to make.

hotography was always something I'd been interested in so I bought a Yashica Electro 35 rangefinder. I soon developed a passion for making photographs. I began to learn how to compose images with help from my Mother and learned about light from movies, photographs and paintings.

Did you learn your art in a special school ?

No. I'm pretty much self taught. Hundreds of hours reading, shooting and looking at art in Museums made up my education.

What a precision… Thanks ! Dear Dave, how long dit it take to find your own style ? How do you define it ?

I think it took about 10 years.

My landscape work is iconic and graphically strong and all about light. My portraits are about light and personality, My Nude Photography is intimate, personal, romantic, emotional, sensual and about the power of the feminine.

How did you get into nude art photography ?

Playboy was my first exposure along with Art galleries that my Mother took us to as soon as I was 8. After that I was inspired by great painters and photographers of the female nude. I attended Erotica LA for a couple of years and photographed the Adult actresses there. I decided that was not nearly enough, not even close to what i wanted to pursue. I was always interested in the female nude in Art so I wanted to make beautiful photos of the female body, but with the power of their personalities and femininity in the forefront.

What are your favorite themes ?

Beauty, Emotion, Sensuality. A woman in a particular environment and her feelings shown in her expressions and body language. The beauty and sensuality of two women together as figures, as lovers or both.

What is your process of creation ? Do you plan every details ?

I plan a venue and a starting point for each set. Then it's improvisation with me and my subject playing off each other. Sometimes by using conversation, sometimes as with Betcee May or Natalia Faina, she reads my mind.

Do you feel particularly inspired by a type of location ? Indoors maybe ?

Anywhere works for me actually. Indoors in a home setting, a studio with bare walls, an abandined factory the streets of a city, nature, I especially like a venue that is visually interesting, either in harmony with my subject or in stark contrast with her.

Some words about your models ? I know Betcee May is your "glorious" Muse…

Betcee May is my number one Muse. Others would be Natalia Faina, Wenona, and Escura. I'm very excited to be working with Roxanne Scheffer later this summer. She is a model of amazing qualities like Betcee May. Exceptional beauty, exceptional emotional range, and exceptional posing talent. Like Betcee May, she's also an accomplished artist herself.

How do you feel at the end of a shooting ?

Drained, sore, and exhilarated !

Have you a special project, some challenges you're dreaming about in a near future ?

I'm going down to mexico to spend five days working with Roxanne Scheffer. I've always dreamed about an opportunity to do something like this. Spend several days working with an exceptional talent exploring many themes and locations !

Have you scheduled your next exhibition ?

Not yet. I need more material.

Are you sure ? You have already so many shoots... And have you published a book ? In magazines ? Is there a new one to come ?

No. I hope to be published in Carrie Leigh Nude Magazine !

I’ll tell her ! Besides shooting, have you another passion ?

Football (Soccer) I was an intercollegiate level player and played in the Seattle Men's League in the first division before a knee injury ended my career. My other passions include hiking nature. exploring great cities with my camera and cycling.

A message to send ?

Not really, except that My art celebrates Women. They are amazing and wonderful. I hope my photographs do something to celebrate their beauty and power.

Thanks a lot Dave for your trust and your friendly support !
