My tribute to the women photographers

Despite Ruth Bernhard, Bettina Rheims, Annie Leibovitz, Sally Mann or Ellen von Unwerth, the women's contributions to the artistic nude photography is under-recognized.

Beyond the traditional and stupid cultural resistances they still face with strength and passion, they make an incredible work, bringing us the very best with grace and harmony.

The women photographers devoted to fine art nude photography show us a rare emotional force and the sensual (rarely sexual) beauty of the woman as seen through the feminine eyes.

Soft or rude, abstract, conceptual or figurative, their photographs have a particular sense, often symbolic and always full of a poetry I admire without moderation.

The second thing is that the number of women photographers working on the male nude is far less than the number of women photographers shooting the female nude. Maybe a question of more photogenic curves ?

And last but not least, for those who choose this fascinating way, they all succeed in the most difficult exercise : the self portraiture as Minon, Rachel Lovitt, Anna Piovani, Marquita Norwood, Vic, Harizma, Sarah Ina Alexander... And this, it is an exception in the men photographers' works.

Since the opening of this site, I've a label I cherish : "woman artist", my tribute to their wonderful artworks. And each time I discover a woman photographer or an inspiring art model, I'm like a child in a toy store... Because I know their particular sensitivity and their outstanding inspiration. Because they make me feel this famous "Wow!" factor we all are searching for.

Ruth Bernhard
"Classic Torso"

" Every artist, in a sense, is missionary. He tries to convey a message to his fellow man – he communicates the awesome presence of truth and beauty he discover in the world around him, in its lakes and mountains, trees, rocks and plants, in its living creatures.

" Down through the centuries poets, sculptors, painters and now photographers, have also been striving to grasp and immortalize the beauty of the human body, both male and female. I see in these forms the elemental relationship to the large forms of nature ; a sense of strength like a rock – fluidity like water – space like a mountain range.

" If I have chosen the female form in particular, it is because beauty has been debased and exploited in our sensual twentieth century. We seem to have a need to turn innocent nature into evil ugliness be the twist of the mind. Woman has been target of much that is sordid and cheap, especially in photography.

" To raise, to elevate, to endorse with timeless reverence the image of woman, has been my mission – the reason for my work."

. And this, you won't find it in the men photographers' works.

You have not been looking for them, obviously.
